Typically nothing more than a familiar name and a tiny profile picture, content marketeers don't usually get much love do they? Let's try to change that! Meet Clara - TradeGecko's Content Marketing extraordinaire, author of a lot of the informative, well-read and (hopefully) much-loved content right here on this very blog.
If you were a stranger meeting yourself for the first time, how would you describe yourself?
I guess it would be something along the lines of…
“Wow, this girl is super crude – but super interesting. I’ll definitely like to get to know her more. She definitely laughs too loud though, and she does seem a little like a bimbo. But I guess there’s more to her… right?”
What are three things which people don’t typically know about you?
People get really surprised when I tell them that I played Touch Rugby for 2-3 years – they look at me and think I’m really fragile and weak, but that’s just right now. Believe it or not, I used to be really fit (once upon a time...) – I really enjoyed getting dirty on the field, I was a beast on it!
Another would be that people get really shocked when I say that I’m originally from China – I was literally born in Shanghai, while my family heritage a little further back hails from Fuzhou. My immediate family came over when I was just five years old, that’s why I feel, talk and act so Singaporean. I really do enjoy going back for visits and just exploring the rest of the country though. I do feel very comfortable going back to China, which is always a pretty liberating experience for me to rediscover the culture and so on – it definitely helps that I know the language as well.
Last but not least, I’m a huge movie junkie. I absolutely love just staying home to watch movies on my laptop, think movies along the line of Blue Valentine. I’m also a particularly big fan of (renowned directors) Quentin Tarantino and Hayao Miyazaki. I guess I love the tragic films, the ones that weigh heavily on the soul because these are the films that give me something to think about – and isn't that what the human experience is all about? To go through pain, to go through suffering – that’s what touches me the most.
What do you think your best characteristic is?
I think that’s a quality that comes in very useful regardless whether it’s a personal or professional issue – it’s easy for me to reach an understanding with the other person, and that’s how I let my sincerity show through. It typically gets the problem solved and the work done very easily…
Do you have any phobias?
Yes! This is really morbid, and I’m not even certain if it’s an actual recognized phobia, but I have a phobia of running out of time. I always feel like I’m too old and not very wise, and that it’s too late to do anything about my life.
I kind of feel like I have a lot of regrets so far, that I’ve screwed up my life badly, I can’t turn back time and that it’s too late for me to… redeem myself in my aspect.
There’s a zombie apocalypse, and you have to leave your house right away. What do you grab first and why?
My collection of shoes! I've invested a lot of money into those shoes over the years, especially when I was still a student and I would have to save up…
For a girl you’re typically either a shoe girl or a bag girl – and for me when I see a pair of shoes I know at first sight whether it’s meant to be mine or not. There’s a special connection between me and my shoes!
Even if I don’t wear them anymore I still treasure them a lot and take them out at home to wear once in a while – I can’t ever wear them out as they’ll break my legs, but yes, shoes!
* Editor's note: How does this help with the zombies?
What was the last thing you Googled?
It was… “What does having a swollen lymph node mean?”
Why you ask? Well basically, I was down with a flu for week – until one day I realized that I had a swollen lymph node after waking up.
So obviously, I Googled that, and absolutely freaked out even more because a lot of searches show up saying that one of the main causes is cancer! As to whether I actually have cancer, no I don’t think so. I hope not anyway…
Would you rather be a clown who distracts the bull at a rodeo, or the cowboy who rides the bull?
I guess I’ll rather be a clown – because riding a bull at a rodeo reminds me of a recent incident I had in Boracay.
I had absolutely no idea who came up with this, but we went for this water activity called the ‘Boracay Fly Fish’.
Its super intense, much like riding a bull, and you get flung off every two seconds.
It was horrible. I had to cling on for dear life… The ride probably lasted for like 10 minutes, but it felt more like 20 hours.
After that activity I had a stiff neck for one entire week, and basically almost broke my back.
I can never imagine putting myself through a similar experience again. So yeah, definitely no ‘Fly Fish’ or being a cowboy, I’ll much rather be the clown!
On a scale of 1 to a 100, how intolerable do you find baby pictures on Facebook?
Here’s another secret about me - I hate babies.
I absolutely hate babies. I just cannot stand them. I do not have the most patience, which is why I really suck at baby-sitting and hand-holding and teaching people stuff – what more babies, and shudder, looking at pictures of babies.
In fact there was this one time… There was this little toddler on the subway, making a ruckus (as they always do) – he was eating M&Ms, and actually threw a half-eaten green M&M right into my shoe! I seriously imagined body-slamming him into the ground.
I think he was like two years old.
* Editor's note: What is wrong with you?!?!
If you had one shot at global stardom on American Idol, what song would you sing and why?
It would have to be ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ by Wheatus, that’s my absolute favorite song.
I lived through this really funny period in high school, where a close friend and I would just go to shopping malls to chill after school.
We would buy ice-cream, and just sit at the roof garden listening to really emotional songs.
The song has stuck since then.
POP CULTURE SNAPSHOT
What are you watching right now?
Everyone has always raved about it, and I’ve been told that it’s one of those rare shows that comes full-circle at the end of the series… Personally, I’m actually very picky about the drama series which I watch because it’s a huge emotional investment as I take really long to get over every movie or show I watch.
What are you listening to right now
Okay, I have this fixed playlist that never actually changes over time.
Of course it contains Teenage Dirtbag and a whole lot of other songs that I find are absolute classics. Songs by like Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, John Mayer and so on. I’m not one that goes for trendy pop songs – but to be honest it has a little of Katy Perry and Eminem and Jay Zhou as well. I love Jay Zhou! I think he’s a musical genius.
What are you reading right now?
So I’m reading this book by Jonathan Fenby entitled ‘History of Modern China – The Fall and Rise of a Great Power, 1850 to the Present’. Reason for this is that I’ve been going back to China a fair bit these few years, and I realized I pretty much know nothing about the country… despite it having developed so much. I just feel that I really need to know more about the country I was originally from.
